Safe Routes To School ENCOURAGEMENT Campaigns
Schedule an encouragement activity or activities to inspire parents and children to get involved. Encouragement activities can be the easiest part of a program to start up, and the emphasis is on having fun. A school/community may choose just one campaign, several, or create their own!
- International Walk and Roll to School Day/Week/Month: Learn more about this internationally recognized event, and download resources to put on your own event(s).
- Ongoing Walk/Roll Wednesdays: Start weekly or monthly Walk/Roll program at your school.
- Golden Sneaker Awards: Classrooms compete to have the highest % of walkers or riders each month, to earn the coveted “Golden Sneaker” award. Download a Golden Sneaker Award guidebook.
- Frequent Walk and Roll Contest (flexible time frame - 1 or more months contest): Kids track the number of days they walk or bike to school with stars on their Frequent Walk and Roll Cards.
- Walking School Bus Campaign: A Walking School Bus is just like a regular school bus, but without the walls or seats, and instead of wheels, we use our feet. Learn more about how to get a walking school bus/bike train at your neighborhood school.
- Bike Train Campaign: A Bike Train is an organized group of students who ride bicycles to school together (with adult supervision). Based on the Walking School Bus model, the Bike Train is an easy way to get a group of kids in your neighborhood more active. Click above to learn more.
- Encouragement Downloadable Resources: Download useful guidebooks, flyers, and forms to encourage more children/parents to walk or ride bicycles (or scooters, skateboards, etc.) to school.
